Papuan Frogmouth

Podargus papuensis, Cattana Wetlands FNQ. The Papuan Frogmouth is the biggest frogmouth (in terms of overall length anyway) and is distinguished by the stunning red eyes as opposed to the yellow ones on the Tawny and its enormous bill. As is usual, this Papuan Frogmouth was nesting in this melaleuca out over the water on one of the creeks. The nest is rudimentary at best. The parents take turns looking after baby with the father normally taking the day-shift.

Brown-backed Honeyeater

Ramsayornis modestus. Cattana Wetlands FNQ. . Was pleased to capture this attractive tropical coastal lowlands honeyeater. Lovely pink tones on bill and legs and characteristic facial markings. Not a lot is known about their life-cycle but they are thought to be one of our few trans-Torres Strait migratory honeyeaters

Ramsayornis modestus Cattana Wetlands FNQ. This honeyeater is common in Far North Queensland but absent from the rest of Australia

Cinnyris jugularis Captured in Cattana Wetlands just North of Cairns. These birds are common along the East coast of Queensland, and indeed throughout South-east Asia along forest edges and in parks and gardens. They love an urban environment. They are such appealing little birds. My objective was to capture the male showing its colourful gorget. I personally preferred a background with a few grass stems rather than a completely smooth shot.

Cyclopsitta diophthalma Double-eyed Fig-parrots nest in a rotting branch by digging out a nest hollow. Once hatched both parents feed the babies. This male is currently feeding a female chick. The feeding process involves regurgitating food and placing it in the chick’s mouth

Numenius minutus. Edmonton, FNQ These guys are tiny long-necked shorebirds, about half the size of a Whimbrel and about 20% of an Eastern Curlew.
